Development of civilization has renamed towns as cities. The concept of star-gazing has gone missing because everybody lives a mechanical life. The reasons behind the invisibility of stars are tall buildings which obstructs the view of the night sky, light pollution, altitude of the particular city and climatic conditions of the city. Thus, people have forgotten to enjoy the night sky.
We conducted surveys to check if the people in my adjoining area and school knew the term star-gazing; and to find differences between urban and rural area and reasons why they like star-gazing.
To build interest and knowledge about star-gazing, schools can conduct workshops, where the neighbor-hood can also take part.
We gathered information and noticed that ‘streetlights’ was used as the common word. We came up with a solution to reduce light pollution caused by streetlights.
We simulated the streetlights to be parallel to the ground with a reflective fixture above its head to create the scattering of the light over a larger area of the ground and avoiding the light to reach the atmosphere above. This will drastically improve the effect of sky-glow on star-gazing.
To implement this model we visited the BBMP officials in charge of our area and requested them to consider our ideas and install streetlights that we designed.
