We focused on improving traffic management on Richmond Road, Bengaluru, particularly during school hours. Bangalore’s (India’s 3rd most populated city) traffic problems are due to overpopulation , radial interconnected road system, and the topography.
The jam-packed roads in this area are due to its location in a very busy part of the city. It is a crucial business hub where many roads meet. This leads to problems of noise and air pollution, and increase in stress, fuel and time wastage, etc.
We focused on these causes:
- Increasing number of individual vehicles commuting.
- Shortage of public transport and school transport.
- Shortage of parking spaces. People park their vehicles on the road.
- More than 60% of Bangalore’s student population comes to the CBD for their education.
- Large number of one-way roads.
We conducted a survey in 3 schools in the area with a fixed questionnaire, to know about their views and suggestions for solving the traffic crisis.
To help resolve this problem, we initiated a project called ‘Tag-Pool; Tag your friends along!’ As part of this project, we have designed an application (app) called ‘SmartTrack’ to help people carpool.
This app shall initially be run on a trial basis by the teachers of our school and subsequently can work on a larger scale specially for the students and teachers of the educational institutions in the CBD area.
This user-friendly and secure app will be officially released and demonstrated in IGYS 2017.
