Waste Management – The Need of the Hour

There seems to be waste everywhere. It doesn’t have to be what is only in the garbage can. It is just the unwanted or unusable material lying around.
Our lack of awareness has led to the major growth in waste. We do not seem to bother about the waste we produce, maybe because it has not started to directly bother us yet. And even if it does, do we know what to do about it or how to go about doing it? We see our waste being dumped into one big garbage truck. But what happens after it’s been collected? None of us seem to bother about that part, because it’s not our job, right?
A group of concerned citizens in 3rd Block Koramangala, Bangalore has taken matters into their own hands and is looking into managing the creation, segregation and disposal of their waste. They have tied up with the BBMP and their waste is being disposed in the right manner. If they can do it, why can’t we?
As part of my 10th grade project, I decided to find out more about the conception and implementation of this waste management project initiated. The various positives and negatives of the waste management techniques being used, were they successful? And if so what was the process?
I collected primary data from individual homes, the BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike) and SAAHAS (a non-profit organisation focused on building capacities for public institutions), the organisation that the 3rd Block Koramangala project is associated with.
By studying the waste management system in 3rd Block Koramangala, I was able to understand the problem of waste management better and how they have worked towards solving the problem locally. With participation from everyone, I know Bangalore can once again a greener and cleaner city.
