Teaching about the South Asian Monsoon

The South Asian Monsoon is about life in India and can be woven into the fabric of learning and teaching. The atmospheric and oceanic flows that lead to the monsoon give us lessons in air pressure, density, and winds. The jet stream and intertropical convergence zone provide examples of the high atmosphere and instruments that we use to study those regions. The monsoon connects South Asia to Atlantic Ocean temperatures, Mediterranean storms, and the Pacific ENSO. Opportunities to ask how the monsoon affects other people and other regions lead us to discussions of cultural geography. Global change and adaptation give speculation on how the monsoon and life in India will evolve in the future.
