Pondicherry’s shoreline has been changing for the past several years. While these changes have many reasons, the main reason is that the citizens of the region have not understood the region’s geography and have interfered with the shoreline.

I studied the shoreline change in the region of White town, Pondicherry – a 1.2 km stretch. I collected satellite images for 1997 – 2017, and some other field information. I used these to analyze the changes. I used geo-referencing, digitization, image classification, image interpretation, and over-lays to observe the shoreline changes.

There has been continuous natural movement of sand along the shoreline of the study region.  The harbor (built in 2007) has  blocked the movement of sand (both erosion and deposition) in shores of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. This has resulted in extreme erosion of shoreline. This is a case of human interference in natural processes.
