Our presentation is about the land-use changes occurring in two localities of Bengaluru – Doddanagamangala and Ananthnagar – due to population rise in the past 10 to 15 years.
We interviewed local people (older and younger generations) and got the following information:
1] Agricultural land has been converted into real estate – apartments, residential colonies and shopping malls.
2] Ananthnagar was a dense forest-like place and Doddanagamangala was an agricultural land as there was abundant flow of water through lakes.
3] Many trees were cut down to make space for apartments and many kinds of shops and shopping malls.
Effects:
- Kammasandra Lake, the only surface source of water for Ananthnagar, and the two lakes which supply water to Doddanagamangala, have been polluted because of waste disposal into the lake.
- The population increase has led to the accumulation of garbage. The roads have become crowded. The serenity of the localities is completely lost in the city culture.
- Increase in the financial status of villagers
- Rise in land prices
- Many shops and malls have been constructed to fulfil the desires of the residents.
What we did:
- Suggested some solutions to the villagers by making them aware of the need of preserving the beauty of the villages by maintaining the greenery.
- Distributed posters recommending that they start small-scale industries in the outskirts of the city. This will lead to the distribution of the population, thereby reducing the pressure.
